United by their shared commitment to empowering people through opportunities, Matthew House Ottawa and Causeway Work Centre have been successfully partnering on local initiatives since 2022.

“We’re really pleased by the work we’ve been able to do with Causeway,” says Allan Reesor-McDowell, MHO’s Executive Director. “We share a deep desire to help people reach their full potential. From connecting newcomers to training opportunities to supporting youth in developing employment skills, we’ve made a great team.”

One of the initiatives our organizations have partnered on is Solutions for Youth, a federally-funded program for persons aged 16-29.

Participants first attend four weeks of in-class employment workshops with Causeway to assess their skills, identify barriers and set employment or educational goals to be met by the end of the program. Workshop topics include resumé writing, interview techniques, and conflict resolution.

After the four weeks of training, youth go on to complete a paid 12-week placement with Matthew House Ottawa.

“They are very welcoming. When you go there, it’s like you’re entering into someone’s home; it’s really exceptional,” explains Julia Churchill, Outreach and Community Supports for Causeway Work Centre. “You don’t often have that kind of support. If it doesn’t work out, that’s okay. There’s no judgement attached to that. It’s hard to find really understanding employers. Matthew House has a basic understanding of the barriers – they get it. That’s why it’s worked so well.”

In addition to Solutions for Youth, MHO and Causeway work together on another important initiative known as the Newcomer Training and Employment Program (NTEP). NTEP offers three months of paid work and on-the-job training at Matthew House for refugees and newcomers. Program participants are provided wraparound supports throughout this time, including access to Causeway’s employment services.

“I was able to start my career in Canada through the program,” shares Femi, a previous NTEP participant. “I started with this part-time role and support, and then eventually was given the chance to lead the Furniture Bank warehouse. I derive strength from this work.”

Matthew House is excited to continue its partnership with Causeway moving forward.

“Together, we can do more to help others,” shares Reesor-McDowell. “And that’s our ultimate goal.”
