Furniture Bank furnishes 1000th home of the year

Matthew House Ottawa’s Furniture Bank has officially furnished 1000 homes this year!

The Furniture Bank program addresses poverty throughout the city by accepting and redistributing gently-used furniture and household items to diverse individuals and families referred by the City of Ottawa and 50+ social service agencies, including refugees and other newcomers, women fleeing violence, and families moving out of homeless shelters.

Since Matthew House Ottawa assumed operation of the Furniture Bank in 2012, the program has not stopped expanding and is currently operating with a team of over 28 volunteers and 12 staff.

“I am so proud and grateful to be a part of this achievement, and grateful to work alongside amazing staff and volunteers to deliver such significant services to people in need,” said Basel Jalab, the Furniture Bank’s Warehouse Manager and Interim Program Manager.

Matthew House Ottawa is especially grateful for the incredible support of the Ottawa community – this accomplishment would not have been possible without the nearly 14,000 pieces of furniture donated to us so far in 2022.

“Furnishing 1000 homes in a year is a huge milestone for our organization,” said Allan Reesor-McDowell, Executive Director at Matthew House Ottawa. “I am grateful for the hard work and commitment of our staff and volunteers, and for the continued generosity of donors who have made this possible.”

“This will always be a bright part of my life that I will carry in my heart and share with my children to encourage them to support such causes in their life,” added Jalab.
