Position Overview
The Furniture Bank truck driver is responsible for the truck and supervision of truck assistants, ensuring all safety procedures are followed, interaction with donors and clients is professional and upholding dignity. In representing Matthew House Ottawa: Furniture Bank (MHO: FB), the driver will be familiar with acceptable items and condition for furniture donations from donors or furniture drop offs to clients. The driver will, also, be responsible for checking and recording items donated, money transactions, collecting the correct fees where applicable. The truck driver will coordinate and advise crew and warehouse staff on loading client and donor furniture for delivery or pickup.
Reporting
The driver will report directly to the Truck Crew Supervisor.
ROLES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Truck Inspection:
· Follow Commercial Vehicle Operators Registration requirements, inspecting truck before each day’s first trip and recording all necessary information.
· Check all Insurance and CVOR documents are up to date
· Check all truck fluid levels and top up where needed
· Inform Senior Manager of any service requirements for the truck or pending expiration of insurance and CVOR documents
· Make sure all safety equipment and required dollies and other moving materials are in the truck and remain in the truck at end of day
· Clean truck as needed
Deliveries and Pickups:
· Follow municipal and building parking policies at donor and client addresses
· Load and off load truck safely and efficiently
· Maintain consistent health and safety standards
Pickups
· Identify and inspect furniture items being donated, refuse unacceptable items
· Match items on pickup document with items being donated and clearly record any changes to pick up order.
· Supervise truck crew to avoid damaging donor property (floors, walls, stairs, etc.)
· Report all accidents or incidents to Senior Manager.
· Collect correct fees and note any adjustments to items picked up and fee, as and when necessary
· Enter method of payment on copy of pickup order for bookkeeping, as and when necessary
Drop offs to clients:
· Communicate with clients before and during delivery
· Drop off furniture according to service paid for by client – indoors or curbside
· Follow procedures outlined for any furniture returns or requests to pick up other furniture from client bearing in mind, truck crew will not take furniture items recipient would like to donate. Any such requests must be channelled to donation coordinator, for a pickup to be scheduled at a fee.
Supervision:
Delegate responsibilities and instruct truck assistants in all operations
Manage efficiency to complete tasks in timely fashion
Instruct on best loading and off-loading during pickups and at warehouse
Delegate truck cleaning duties as and when necessary
Delegate warehouse duties to truck crew
Requirements:
D class driver’s licence
At least two years experience truck driving in Canada or North America (driving history abstract required)
A Level 1 Criminal Records Check
