Job Title: Resettlement Intern

Department: Refugee Services (MHO:RS)

Reports: Program Manager (PM:RS)

Hours and Wages: 30 hours/week, $14/hour

Requirements: Post-secondary enrolment, 17-30 years of age, Police Records Check (Vulnerable)

Term: June 18 – August 10, 2018 (flexible start/end dates)

Position Overview:

The role of the Resettlement Intern is to assist in the planning and execution of programs at Refugee Services’ residence. This includes acquiring resources and coordinating the efforts of volunteers in order to deliver programs according to plan. The Resettlement Intern must adhere to the vision, mission and values of Matthew House Ottawa (found at www.matthewhouseottawa.org)

Essential Job Functions (including but not limited to):

  •   Assisting the Program Manager, Refugee Services with programming

  •   Leading new residents through the intake process

  •   Assisting new residents to connect with various community agencies

  •   Assisting in the coordination of volunteer schedules

  •   Effectively communicating project expectations to volunteers in a timely and clear fashion

  •   Delegating tasks and responsibilities to appropriate personnel

  •   Assisting with practical day to day operations of the residence (liaising with trades people and service providers, etc.)

  •   Attending to other administrative/resettlement tasks as required Essential requirements

Certification: Clear Police Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (MHO: RS can provide successful applicant with a letter to present to Ottawa Police Service)

Education:

  •   Proof of full-time enrolment in a related post-secondary program for the coming academic year (e.g. Social Services Worker, International Development, Conflict Studies etc.)

  •   Proof of enrolment in an academic program for the previous academic year

Skills:

 Organization, effective communication, time management, computer literacy (MS Microsoft Office and google docs) and cultural sensitivity. High level of fluency in English (written and spoken) essential.

Highly desirable

Certification:

  •   Valid “G” driver’s license and access to a vehicle Skills:

  •   Fluency in multiple languages an asset (especially French), ability to deal with emotional stress of residents

Experience:

 Administrative duties, experience working with marginalised population groups, experience with resettlement

 Fluid work environment, some irregular hours
